Notes for 'A New Look at Old Armenisms in Kartvelian' (Armeniaca 1, 2022), April 2025

Since writing this article in 2021–2022, I have revised my view of some of the etyma. I hope the following notes will clarify my current position; see also the discussion of these words in my dissertation (Thorsø 2023).

Old Georgian ɣwvay ღჳვაჲ 'juniper'

More likely, this loan went in the opposite direction, from a Kartvelian source to Armenian gi գի 'juniper' (see Thorsø 2023: 57 and now also Simon 2023).

Georgian soḳo სოკო 'mushroom'

I think the hypothesis of a borrowing from Armenian sownkn սունկն 'mushroom' should be finally abandoned. There is no way to explain the loss of the nasal. Instead, the Armenian and Kartvelian words are likely parallel borrowings, possibly from a Nakh-Daghestanian source *s(ː)ͻ́ḳom ~ *s(ː)ͻ́nḳo (see Thorsø 2023: 204–207).
